Government of India launched Post Matric Scholarship for students belonging to Minority Community to uplift the economically backward families. Under the scheme Indian Govt provides fund to State Govt depending on the population of minority in the State. The State Govt in turn distributes scholarship to the eligible students. The Post Matric Scholarship is awarded for studies to students applying for higher secondary school/college/university and also covers technical and vocational courses in Industrial Training Institutes at Class XI and XII level. The aim is provide students of financially backward minority community to enter the mainstream education.
The scholarship is applicable to students belonging to Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist, Parsi community. The no of students receiving scholarship depends on the population of that minority community in the state. More than 20000 scholarships were granted in the last year.
Eligibility Criteria for Students
- Government has laid down certain eligibility criteria for students to qualify for receiving scholarship. Inorder to receive scholarship students have to fulfill the following criteria.
- Student must belong to anyone of the following minority community mentioned above.
- Student must have secured more than 50% marks in the previous exam.
- Annual income of the student’s family must not exceed Rs.2 lakh (including all the sources).
- Student must possess necessary documents proving the minority under the National Commission for Minorities Act, 1992.
Special quota for Girls
Govt has set aside 30% of the total scholarship for girl students. The no of scholarship awarded depends on the population of the state and out of total scholarships to be given in that state 30% is kept for girls. However, if the quota remains vacant then the remaining scholarships will be awarded to eligible boy candidates.
How students are selected for scholarship?
As the no of scholarships awarded is fixed and very limited govt has to adopt strict measures for considering the students application. Students belonging to BPL families are given first preference in an ascending order. New applications are cleared only after fully exhausting the renewal application.
Duration of Scholarship
The scholarship will be granted for entire duration of the course. Additionally students will be provided monthly allowance during the months of college or 10 months. Monthly allowance is different for Hostlers and Localites.

How to Apply
Application in the format prescribed by the Indian Government should be submitted to Secretary of the department. of the concerned State Govt/UT administration. The application should be submitted to the residing state.

- One passport size photo
- One attested copy of certificates, diploma, degree etc.
- Income certificate in the prescribed format
- Residence Proof
- A receipt of scholarship if granted in the previous year.

For renewal scholarship will be granted after full assessment of performance in the previous year. A student must have scored 50% marks in the previous year. In case of violation of terms the student’s scholarship will be cancelled or suspended.
The scholarship will be granted at the time of starting of new academic year. The monthly allowance will be given from 1 April or the starting of course whichever is earlier. If the student is already taking benefit of another scholarship scheme then he/she will not be eligible for minority scholarship scheme. In case of students receiving stipend in PG course or paid through internship in M.B.B.S such students will not received monthly allowance under the scheme.
